'The Forgotten Service' by Angela Raby
The story of London's, often forgotten, wartime Auxiliary Ambulance Service.
The role of the Auxiliary Ambulance Service during the Second World War in London and other cities is largely undocumented. From over 130 stations, an estimated 10,000 volunteers collected the living, and the dead, victims of the bombs, using crudely adapted and outdated commercial vans. These volunteers, coming from all social backgrounds, were plunged into situations as traumatic and horrific as anything encountered by the other services.
This book uses original and unpublished material to tell the story of Auxiliary Ambulance Station 39, situated in the heart of London. At the core of the narrative lie the memories of the authors Aunt, Station Officer May Greenup, who served at Station 39 for five and a half years.
