In 2008 we made 92 awards to registered charities, totalling £3.23 million. The recipients included, for example, care homes, hospices, Citizens Advice Bureaux, Alzheimer's support groups and veterans' associations. See Past donations.
We are able to support any registered charity that can identify, quantify and cost the benefit it brings to members of the RAF family.
The RAF family includes all those who are serving or have ever served in the RAF (including National Service), as well as their partners and those who remain dependent on a current or former member of the RAF.
- Applications may be made at any time.
- Applications towards running costs should normally be made in arrears and show the net charitable cost of support given to the RAF family over the same period as its latest audited annual report and accounts.
- The latest annual report and accounts need to be submitted with every application.
We usually make donations proportional to the net charitable value of support given by the charity to RAF family members among those whom the charity has helped.
We recently gave £6,000 to the Spinal Injuries Association (SIA). The work of the SIA was first brought to our attention in 1982 and we have since made 15 donations. This support is in recognition of the advice and practical assistance that the SIA gives to members of the RAF family whose lives have been affected by spinal chord injury.
We are able to contribute to capital project costs as well as running costs. Such donations are also usually proportional to the projected percentage of RAF family members among those who will benefit from the project. Applications for assistance towards project costs need to be made in advance, showing full details of the planned work and projected cost.
Notes on applications
- Please look at our past donations to get a sense of the range and type of charities we support. However, we are always willing to consider new types of applicant, if you can show how your charity helps the RAF family.
- Please be patient waiting for our response. The committee that decides our donations meets every fortnight but the speed of our response to your application will depend on the level of assistance sought, as well as our other commitments.
- Please be aware that we do not usually support campaigning organisations, organisations with strong political affliliations or research organisations.
