Connie Hird, 88 from Bridlington in Yorkshire, served in the RAF between 1941 and 1944 as a Leading Aircraftswoman. Stationed at the North West Communications Centre in east Lancashire, Connie was a Wireless Operator, passing messages between RAF departments. She met her husband Eric - a former Aircraftsman - in the Service, and left to have their baby.
After Eric’s death, Connie found herself with a much reduced income and her house needing some essential repairs. Her 1950s bungalow still had many of its original windows and doors, with rotting wooden frames. “It would have taken everything I had to replace them,” said Connie.
After examining her case, the RAF Benevolent Fund was able to make the much needed repairs to Connie’s home. We also went a step further and arranged quarterly maintenance grants to improve her quality of life.
“I’m so grateful,” said Connie, “the maintenance grant has given me such peace of mind to know that I will be able to keep my home in good order in spite of such rising costs as we all now face.”
