Sickness and bereavement can cause a number of unexpected short term expenses at a time when it can be difficult to cope.
Rather than specifying which expenses we are able to give you assistance with paying, we prefer to leave the possibilities open, so that we have the flexibility to help you in any appropriate way.
Our principle criteria for offering financial help for emergency needs is that your need is a consequence of a serious illness or death in your family. The Harris family are an example of the help we give.
Helping the Harris family be near their son
When Kevin Harris' three-year-old son Rhys was diagnosed with a life-threatening genetic defect that was destroying his immune system, Rhys had to go to hospital in Newcastle in order to undergo a bone marrow transplant.
The family were living in Newbridge, Wales, but Kevin knew that Rhys would need his family near him during his treatment, as their love and support would aid his chance of recovery.
Rhys' recovery would take a whole year, so the family were faced with either losing their home in Wales or insurmountable financial difficulties.
After Kevin got in contact with us, we agreed to pay the rent on a property in Newcastle, while paying the mortgage costs on the family home in Wales until they returned.
