Electric mobility scooters, powered and manual wheelchairs
We provide 350 wheelchairs and scooters annually.
We offer an all-inclusive service for the provision of wheelchairs and scooters, encompassing assessment by an Occupational Therapist, purchase and subsequent delivery. The service is provided in conjunction with a commercial mobility supplier who acts as "preferred provider". Powered wheelchairs and scooters are normally given on a "loan" basis, although machines are provided for beneficiaries' use for as long as they are needed. Manual wheelchairs are provided as grants. See Factsheet K - Loan of electric wheelchair or scooter by the RAF Benevolent Fund.
Before applying to us, you should consider whether you will first be required to approach the NHS (powered and manual wheelchairs only) or, if you receive the Higher Rate Component of the Disability Living Allowance, the Motability Scheme. See Factsheet L - NHS and Motability information.

Help towards Motability vehicles and vehicle adaptations
We can help towards the deposit of Motability vehicles, both standard vehicles and specialist wheelchair accessible solutions, and also adaptations such as wheelchair hoists, steering wheel aids and hand controls. Motability may be able to fund adaptations - enquiries should be referred to their Customer Services on 0845 456 4566 or via the Motability website.
A Mobility Assessment Centre report should be provided to confirm the suitability of, and need for, specialist vehicles and adaptations.
