In autumn mists: A tribute poem

Published:

To mark Remembrance this year, tribute writer Terence Foster shares a poem paying respect to those who served in the World Wars and other conflicts.

In autumn mists that time is near
When minds will change and thoughts are clear.
Gone are those who gave their all.
In times of war they heard one call,
And to their duty, they flew there
To take the load, and bear their share.

We pay respects to all who served

Each one’s bond was a driving force
Linked to hopes on an unknown course
Where conflict shaped toughest minds
Adding grit to battle grinds.
No time was spared for doubting thoughts
At times to act. Or fail for nought.

We give our praise to those who served

The noise, the din, the crossfire rounds,
Framed each day with sickening sounds.
Victims grew at startling rates
Leaving some to unknown fates,
Then, hopes were safe or harshly real
With losses massed in one ordeal.

We mark our thanks to those who served

In autumn mists that time is now.
Thankful minds and a lasting vow
Mark all debts to those who served.
Paying tribute so deserved
To every role in building peace.
May calm remain and conflicts cease.
They will never be forgotten
