To mark National Poetry Day this year, former RAF Teleprinter Operator Irene Strange, 90, penned a poem about a lunch social the RAF Benevolent Fund arranged for her and two fellow WRAF veterans.

WAFFIE GALS

Three gorgeous gals, out on a spree,

Here comes Dorothy, Sybil and me.

To seek a restaurant we know.

WAFFIE's in our former days,

Daring exploits, memories to amaze.

Ninety eight Golden years

Radio telephone op, Dorothy, knew no fears.

"Base calling" to Pilot and Tower,

Then, "Over and Out" was Dorothy's Power.

Sybil, a Corporal, at Bletchley Park,

Now, Ninety four, she made her mark.

Aerial coordinator, plotting Maps.

Codes with precision, No mishaps.

Irene, the youngest, goodness me, just Ninety,

Teleprinter operator and Morse code, so mighty,

Dot, Dot, Dot, dash, dash, dash, I well recall,

Long term memory, remembering all.

Oh! to get out and about, "we were away"

THE RAF Benevolent Fund, Made our day.
