5K fundraiser takes place at Ulster University in aid of RAF Benevolent Fund

Earlier this month an all-new 5K trail run and 1.5K children's race took place at Ulster University's Coleraine Campus to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund.

With more than 110 runners taking part in the 5K and a further 50 children taking part in the 1.5K, the event successfully raised more than £2,000 for the charity in its centenary year.

Race organiser Julie Corbett was inspired to plan the event after she was forced to drop out of a fundraising challenge for the charity earlier this year due to unforeseen health reasons.

Julie said: "I had planned to run in one of the RAF Benevolent Fund's fundraisers earlier in the year. However, once I'd had cartilage surgery I knew that wouldn't be possible, so I decided to organise an event here in Northern Ireland myself instead. I'm so pleased to have been able to do my part in supporting the Fund in its 100th year."

Ulster University granted access to its new trail path for the event and also invited Julie to include the challenge as part of its Big Day Out – and initiative to help develop connections and boost engagement with the local community. Following positive feedback from both the University and those who participated in the run, there has been a provisional agreement to host the event again next year.
