Steve Busby, from Billericay in Essex, will be taking in the Dambusters Ride on 14 May, a cycle fundraiser organised by the RAF Benevolent Fund.
The Dambusters Ride pays tribute to the Dambusters, members of the RAF's 617 Squadron who were assembled to bomb three dams in Germany's Ruhr Valley on the night of 16-17 May 1943 – also known as Operation Chastise. It was a risky raid, dropping the revolutionary bouncing bomb at low level, and the cost was high. Of 133 aircrew who left, 53 were killed and 3 became prisoners of war.
Steve was inspired to sign up for the ride following the passing of his father, Donald Busby, who died in September last year aged 89. Donald served as a Flight Lieutenant Navigator in the RAF between 1950 and 1962.
Steve’s interest in cycling piqued during lockdown, when he managed to get his dad’s old bike – which was bought in 1948 when Donald was 16 years old – roadworthy again. The bike had been kept in the family having previously been used by Steve’s uncle and brother.
Steve said: “I found out about the Dambusters Ride and just knew I had to take part and raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund to support the amazing work they do. Donations were given to the Fund at my father’s funeral in lieu of flowers – it’s a charity we very much support as a family.”
He added: “It’s the first cycling event I’ve ever done and I’m excited to do the challenge with others and see the sights of Lincolnshire.” The Dambusters Ride consists of two elements: a Virtual Ride on 7-8 May and a Heritage Ride taking place in Lincolnshire on Saturday 14 May.
