Laura Adlington tea party

Great British Bake Off finalist calls on fundraisers to use 'magic of baking' to support charity

Baker extraordinaire Laura Adlington has given her support to the Battle of Britain Tea Party, after the charity behind it helped her grandmother.

The RAF Benevolent Fund is the RAF’s leading welfare charity, providing support for serving personnel, veterans and their families like Telephone Friendship Groups which keep socially isolated members of the RAF Family in touch with like-minded people.

Laura, who took part in the popular baking show last year, said: "I've always loved how baking can bring people together, and I have wonderful memories of my Nan making cakes with me as a child.

"The RAF Benevolent Fund has helped my Nan stay connected to the wider RAF Family, so she's had some great company during these difficult 18 months. That’s why I’m supporting the Battle of Britain Tea Party – to help the Fund help those who helped us, in our hour of need. All using the magic of cake!"

The Battle of Britain Tea Party pays tribute to the airmen who took part in the famous air campaign above the skies of Great Britain, 81 years ago. Fundraisers will raise a tea cup and say cheers for all those who fought in the Battle, in the summer of 1940.

The Allied forces' victory proved to be a turning point in the Second World War, as it represented the first major victory against the German military. Churchill famously said of the pilots who flew during the Battle that 'never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few'.

Ruth Gilford, Community Fundraiser at the RAF Benevolent Fund, said: "We are thrilled to be bringing our Battle of Britain tea parties back for a second year. Hosting your own tea party is a fantastic – and fun – way to remember and celebrate those who risked their lives to protect ours during the infamous battle.

"By hosting a tea party, not only will you be giving thanks to these brave airmen, but you will also help raise much-needed funds to help support the RAF Family for many years to come."
