Five members of the RAF Spitfire 7s committee switched scrums for saddles to cycle from Poland to Kent to mark the 75th anniversary of the Great Escape.

The RAF officers began their eight-day challenge by taking part in a ceremony to remember the 50 prisoners of war who were shot in the aftermath of the Second World War escape. The event, took place on the 75th anniversary of the breakout at the notorious Prisoner of War camp Stalag Luft III, now in Zagan, Poland.

From there the group, featuring a training officer, multi-engine pilot, helicopter pilot, fast-jet pilot to be and an engineer, embarked on Exercise Home Run, travelling from Poland through Germany, Holland, and France.

Their journey tracked that of the three successful escapees who made a 'home run' 75 years ago, making it as far as neutral soil. The remaining 73 prisoners were caught, 23 of them returned to imprisonment and 50 shot under Hitler's orders. The Spitfire 7s paid their respects at Colditz Castle and the Mohne Dame as they rode through Europe.

As well as paying tribute to the Great Escapers, the Spitfire 7s were raising awareness of the work of the RAF Benevolent Fund, which marks 100 years of support for the RAF Family this year.

The team were joined by RAF Benevolent Fund Ambassador Mike Goody for the final leg of their journey, from Canterbury to Faversham.

He said: "Thanks so much to the Spitfire7s for inviting me along for the last leg of this incredible challenge. To cycle more than 1,000km in eight days is a top effort! Well done."
