Adelphi Distillery has released a limited-edition single cask whisky to mark the Dambusters 80th anniversary and raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund.
This year’s bottling is the seventh in a series by Adelphi Distillery to support the work of the Fund. The whisky is a limited edition, with only 335 bottles produced at cask strength, with no added colour.
From each bottle sold, Adelphi and Royal Mile Whiskies will each donate £5 to the Fund.
The Dambusters were members of RAF's 617 Squadron who were assembled to bomb three dams in Germany's Ruhr Valley on the night of 16-17 May 1943 – also known as Operation Chastise.
This year marks 80 years since the risky raid, in which the revolutionary bouncing bomb, the brainchild of engineer Barnes Wallis, was dropped at low level on Germany’s industrial heartland in the Ruhr Valley. The mission was a success, but the cost was high; of 133 aircrew who left, 53 were killed and three became prisoners of war.
Alex Bruce, Managing Director of Adelphi Distillery said: "We are delighted to be working with the RAF Benevolent Fund on our seventh Scotch Whisky collaboration. Each year we select a one-off single cask of Scotch whisky to commemorate an event in the RAF’s extraordinary history, and this year we have chosen a delicious seven year old ex-Sherry cask from our own Ardnamurchan Distillery. With notes of nutmeg, orange peel, beeswax, and Grand Marnier, we are confident that this will be enjoyed by all."
He continued: "We are equally delighted to have teamed up again with our friends at Royal Mile Whiskies, who are not only retailing the bottles on our behalf, but also matching our £5 donation to the Fund."
The Ardnamurchan Distillery of the Western Highlands, Scotland, has recently been awarded Best New Distillery at the Online Scottish Whisky Awards.
