Station Grants

For the second year running, the Fund have assisted the RAF with grant funding to support their plans for Operation Christmas 2022.

The RAF engages with local veterans to provide either a festive meal on station or arrange the home delivery of a festive hamper by uniformed personnel.

This year, the Fund spent £8,645 across 19 RAF stations. Providing meals to more than 450 veterans alongside the delivery of over 310 festive hampers.

One of the veterans receiving a festive hamper was retired Group Captain John Craig, a Tornado pilot during his long RAF career. John currently resides in a care home near to RAF High Wycombe and his hamper was delivered to him by RAF Warrant Officer Linda Clark and the Fund’s Irene Greenwood.

John was pleased to see his visitors and enjoyed chatting. When asked what he thought of his hamper, he said: “The gift and the visit were absolutely delightful.”

Retired veteran Mr Les Blackburn said: “First of all, I wish you a happy and successful New Year. Secondly, thank you for the bag of Christmas goodies that was brought to me by the Station Captain. Such a pleasant surprise! I must confess it gave a sense of childish pleasure to have a bag full of simple things as gifts. Coupled with the comfort I get from my Telephone Friendship Group; I feel as if I have suddenly hit the jackpot thanks to the RAF Benevolent Fund.”

A handful of RAF Personnel also shared their thoughts on the operation.

Junior Ranking Personnel, Jessica Slater, RAF Coningsby, said: “I chose to volunteer for the Benevolent Fund on the premise that one day I may be in a similar situation. Even ten minutes of company can make a difference to veterans who are isolated around the holiday period. It’s vital to stay connected to those who’ve served and are serving, especially around Christmas time. For many it can be a struggle, financially or emotionally, and making people feel included is the least we can do in return for their many years of service.”

Junior Ranking Personnel, Alfie Perry, RAF Coningsby, said: “I volunteered to help with the Hampers for Veterans because I am humbled by their selfless contribution and service to our country. By spending personal time with them I can find out more about their service and life. My Dad served in the RAF and liked to talk about his experiences in India. Because of this, I understand the importance of offering a listening ear.”
