Queen's Birthday Honours: RAF Benevolent Fund advocate Kirsty Murphy to be made an MBE
Kirsty Murphy, long standing supporter of the RAF Benevolent Fund, is to be made a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her service to aviation. Her honour, announced in the Queen's Birthday Honours 2021, also recognises her advocacy for young people in the aviation sphere and her charitable activities.
Kirsty, who lives in Northamptonshire, enjoyed a 17-year career in the Royal Air Force, most notably as the first female member of the RAF Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows. Following her military career, Kirsty became a pilot with the Blades Aerobatic Display Team, allowing her to continue thrilling aviation fans across the nations, and encourage youth audiences to explore their passion in aeronautics. Through the Blades, Kirsty has also dedicated her time to championing the RAF Benevolent Fund, generating vital awareness and funds for the RAF Family.
Kirsty said: "It is an absolute honour to be named in the Queen's Birthday Honours – to be recognised with an MBE is a genuine but wonderful surprise. I am passionate about aviation and raising the aspiration of young people. To be able to spread awareness and encourage others, especially young women and girls and through the charitable work of the RAF Benevolent Fund, is really important to me. The last year has been challenging for us all but through events including International Women's Day, I'm proud that I've been able to keep speaking to and inspiring youngsters and highlighting a cause that means a lot to me.
Air Vice-Marshal Chris Elliot, Controller of the RAF Benevolent Fund, congratulated Kirsty on her accolade: "Kirsty is a rare character: dedicated, passionate and inspiring, while seeking no applause. Despite her many achievements, rather than championing herself, Kirsty has long advocated youth and female engagement within the RAF Family and beyond. Her commitment has seen her, in partnership with the Fund, inspire younger generations to consider aviation as a path worth exploring. For many of these young people, aviation isn't always a natural choice for a career but with Kirsty's encouragement, they soon come to see that no matter your background, circumstances or gender, much can be achieved with the right support.
"Kirsty has demonstrated an incredible commitment and passion for aviation and our cause, particularly around International Women's Day and key RAF anniversaries, helping us ensure that no member of the RAF Family faces adversity alone. Congratulations Kirsty, your recognition is thoroughly well deserved."
