RAF Rugby Union kick off the season in style

​Following more than a year away from the pitch, the RAF Rugby Union proved yesterday that they are ready to showcase their skills to the masses, with a thrilling display at Ealing Trailfinders. 

Alongside supporters and sponsors, RAF Benevolent Fund Ambassador Stu Robinson was also in attendance, speaking to the crowd, fresh from winning a gold medal at the 2020 Paralympics as part of the Team GB Wheelchair Rugby Team. The day saw spectators witness RAF Benson take on RAF Marham in the Warrington Morris Shield, and RAF Brize Norton and RAF Lossiemouth battle it out for the RAF Rugby Union Cup fixture.

Like so many, the RAF Rugby Union have been heavily impacted by Covid-19, so the players were keen to get back on the pitch. With all to play for, the Shield was won by RAF Marham while RAF Brize Norton took home the Cup. Air Vice-Marshal Paul Godfrey, Commander UK Space Command and Chairman of RAF Rugby Union said: "It's been an absolute delight to see our rugby players back in action after more than a year away. Today's event at Ealing Trailfinders demonstrated our teamwork and professionalism, while enabling us to thank the players, staff and supporters for their dedication through difficult times.

"The physical and mental impact of the lack of sport and competition during the darker days of the pandemic should not be underestimated. As a proud advocate of the RAF Benevolent Fund, knowing that the Fund will continue to be there for us, whether supporting us on operations, on the rugby field or long after we have left the Service is a great comfort. I hope that everyone in the RAF Family knows what the Fund can do for them in times of need and we thank them for their amazing support."

RAF Rugby Union hope to complete a full season of competition, restrictions permitting, including the Inter-Services Cup in March 2022.
