Remembering the men of the Great Escape

Today we remember the 50 men who were murdered by the Gestapo after escaping from Stalag Luft III in the Great Escape.

Flight Lieutenant Henry J Birkland, Canadian, born 16 August 1917, 72 Squadron (shot down 7 November 1941, Spitfire Vb, W3367), recaptured near Sagan, last seen alive 31 March 1944; murdered by Lux and Scharpwinkel; cremated at Liegnitz.
Flight Lieutenant E Gordon Brettell DFC, British, born 19 March 1915, 133 (Eagle) Squadron (shot down 26 September 1942, Spitfire IX BS313), recaptured Scheidemuhl, murdered by Bruchardt 29 March 1944, cremated at Danzig.
